Enhancing Speech Intelligibility at St Sofia Greek Orthodox Cathedral, London
As a Grade I listed cathedral with a vast domed interior and highly reflective surfaces, St Sofia presented a complex acoustic environment. The brief was to improve speech intelligibility for services and spoken word, without compromising the aesthetics or fabric of the building.
The solution centred on the deployment of Renkus-Heinz ICONYX beam-steering loudspeakers, selected for their ability to precisely control vertical dispersion and direct sound towards the congregation. The system is supported by Powersoft amplification, with detailed system optimisation ensuring consistent performance across the space.
By steering sound away from reflective surfaces and focusing coverage on the listening area, the installation significantly reduces reverberant build-up and improves clarity throughout the cathedral. The result is a discreet, high-performance system that delivers intelligible speech regardless of listener position.
The challenges faced at St Sofia are typical of many churches and religious venues across the UK, where long reverberation times, architectural constraints and visual sensitivities must all be balanced. This project highlights how the correct application of beam-steering technology, combined with accurate modelling and system design expertise, can deliver meaningful improvements in even the most demanding environments.
CUK works closely with integrators to apply these principles across worship projects of all sizes, from historic listed buildings to modern community spaces.
